This year I'm starting a lot from seed since I have two new flower beds and need many plants to fill them out and I wanted to grow some unusual varieties.
I found the best way to start them indoors was to use a heating pad during the day and then turn it off at night if growing in pots or peat pods. I used the grow lights too above the peat pods. I also use the Aerogarden system which is a hydroponic seed starting system (in above photo).
For our own garden, these are the varieties I started from seed for the first round:
Tomatoes-Cherokee Purple, Italian Pear heirloom paste, Chocolate Pear, Rebel Starfighter, Sicilian yellow storage tomato, Purple Russian, Red, Pink and Purple Brandywine, A Grappoli D'Inverno winter grape tomato, Sweetheart Cherry
Herbs-Rosemary, Sweet Basil, Cardinal Basil, Marjoram, Butterfly Papalo, Lemon Savory, Red Shiso, Chervil, Winter Savory, Bouquet Dill, Sage, several types of thyme (creeping, white, lavender, wild, orangelo, magic carpet)
Okra-Red Burgundy
Pepper-Ancho Poblano, chocolate sweet pepper, Banana, orange bell, red bell peppers
Eggplant-Shiromaru, Amadeo, Rotanda Bianca

I'll start squash, cucumbers, pole beans, and melons in a few weeks.
Seeds can be stored in ziplock bags in the refrigerator for years. I just use a few more for the older seeds in case they don't germinate as well.
